HARMONY--It may have been a cool and drizzly night on Friday, but that didn't dampen the spirits or the music coming from the downtown Grange Hall in Harmony. In their new location, moving from the Harmony Country Store, the group of musicians made guests forget the rain and warmed the hearts of the music fans in attendance. The Friday Night Harmony Jamboree actually began playing about four or five years ago, according to Winnie Bush Viles. Originally known as the Classic Country Boys and playing at the Harmony Country Store, they have continued to grow in number, which is the reason they have moved to the Harmony Grange just across the street. “We are just a group of people who get together every Friday night to play and sing a mix of country and bluegrass music because we love it. Some weeks we have about nine or ten here, but recently the group has grown.” This past Friday night proved that point. On stage, a range of guitars, banjos, a string bass, fiddles and percussion filled the room with a wonderful down home sound. Performers begin arriving around 5 p.m. and range in age from late teens and early twenties to the more seasoned veterans (ages shall remain unmentioned). By 5:30, the group is in full swing. The audience filters in as well, and by 6:00 they are singing and dancing. It's the type of music where you just can't sit there and not do something, even if is to only tap your foot or clap your hands. One of the more recent additions to the Jamboree is a 17-year-old with his guitar, harmonica and white hat. This night also added another younger first timer. With instrument in hand, he took a place among the seasoned veterans on stage, and it didn't take long for him to look like a regular. The evening is pretty informal with people coming and going, but there was a constant stream of music. This week the group played until about 9 p.m.. That is an advantage to moving into the Grange. “We used to have to stop at 8. Now we can play longer,” according to Tracy Dube. So Friday nights, come to the Harmony Jamboree at the Harmony Grange Hall,. Admission is free, but donations are welcomed. Starting time? Around 5:30 p.m. Ending time? Maybe 9. See you there.
