Swimming Pool Fundraising nearing Goal PDF Print E-mail

PITTSFIELD – The fundraising goal for the new Pittsfield community swimming pool is within reach, according to Committee Chairman Mary Gaeta. The committee will meet again at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at the Pittsfield Municipal Building.
At last report, the fundraising was aided with a donation of $10,000 from Northeast Environmental Services, owned by Michael Vigue of Pittsfield. The balance left to raise to reach the $400,000 goal is about $110,000, Gaeta said.
“I think this is just marvelous, when you think so much has come from the cans distributed around the community, and a lot of $5, $10 and $20 contributions from individuals. Of course, we got some big money, too.”
Fundraising to replace the aging community pool began last year after years of discussion and delay. The former Kiwanis pool was built in 1955. Last summer, demolition began on the pool along with a naming ceremony to honor long-time Pittsfield resident Paul Bertrand. A longtime supporter of Pittsfield sports and youth programs, Bertrand was honored with his name emblazoned on a marker at the pool, making it the Paul Bertrand Community Pool.
Additional fundraising efforts and grant applications are pending including an application to the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation, and a request to the neighboring towns of Detroit and Burnham. A local fundraiser for local scrapbook enthusiasts, a daylong scrapping event, is slated from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Pittsfield Masonic Hall on Hamilton Drive.
Construction at the pool site began with Custom Pools of New Hampshire, pouring a new gunite pool, which will include a children’s area, jets, a picnic area for parents and an updated and renovated bathhouse. Work will continue on the facility in the spring.
