March is Key Club's busiest month, due to the fact we are preparing for convention. The Dexter Regional High School Key Club has entered several contests for the district convention in Springfield, MA. Some of these contests include “a year in review” scrapbook, which Key Club members have been continuously working on. The Club will be entering a poster contest. The poster was done by Jeff White, one of our members who is in the graphic design class at the TCTC. Thomas Nokes has submitted an essay for the essay contest. The Club has also put in for numerous other contests and hope to come back from Convention with an award at some level in all categories.
Along with preparing for the district convention, the club is actively working with their two after-school programs in the SAD 46 primary schools. The K-Kids program is going along quite nicely. The Dexter K-Kids recently finished their mitten drive; they had a goal of 35 pairs mittens and surpassed their goal with an outstanding 100 pairs of mittens. The Dexter K-Kids and Builders Club recently did hat days to raise money for Camp Sunshine. The K-Kids group raised $75 and the Builders Club raised $31, giving them a total of $106. Camp Sunshine is on Sebago Lake in Casco, Maine. The camp is open to families who have children suffering from serious illness. The Camp is free of charge and open all year round, the camp includes activity centers, outings, etc. The Dexter Key Club has actively donated to Camp Sunshine for many years. The B.U.G.s program at the Dexter Primary School is coming along really well. Both the Key Clubbers and the students seem to be enjoying the after-school program which runs from 2:45 - 3:45 on Monday and Thursdays. On May 5, the Key Club will be hosting an honors assembly for the B.U.G.s (students) and they will receive t-shirts and certificates. The Key Club did a lot of recycling in February: 18 cell phones, 87 Ink Cartridges, 66 Ink Cartridges donated by the Scrapbooking ladies of Close to My Heart, 6 Key Clubbers brought in can tabs. In the Bangor Daily News this week, Renee Ordway's Column stated that " 65,000 tons of cell phones are discarded each year." The Key Club accepts donations of Can Tabs, Cell Phones, and Ink Cartridges all year long. The Key Club's annual 30-hour famine is coming up with dates being March 21st and 22nd. The Key Clubbers will be cleaning the school and participating in a lockdown. The Key Clubbers will be collecting pledges to help relieve world hunger. The Key Clubbers will also be using this time to work on the Scrapbook and Service Fair boards for Convention. The High School Musical is right around the corner, this year’s production is Bells are Ringing, The Musical will be March 13, 14, and 15. The Key Club will be helping to set up for the musical and will be selling tickets for the show and ushering people to their seats. The High School Advisory program will also be hosting its career day on March 19, Key Club members help set up and escort speakers to their scheduled rooms.
