PITTSFIELD – About 40 Republicans and wannabe-Republicans gathered in Pittsfield Saturday, Feb. 2, for a regional Somerset County caucus, as part of a day-long statewide caucus effort, and presidential preference poll. “This is the best attended caucus I’ve been involved with,” State Rep. Stacy Fitts, R-Pittsfield, said in opening remarks. As the local host, Fitts provided direction for conducting the caucus along with former State Party Chairman Kathy Watson, also of Pittsfield. Senator Doug Smith, R-Dover-Foxcroft, was in attendance to meet with party members from the Somerset county towns in his district and offer a promotion on behalf of the Mitt Romney campaign. He characterized Romney as a “true conservative” who has “performed” in an executive role and “performance counts.” Fitts spoke on behalf of Senator John McCain, citing him as the candidate “who can step into the role without a hiccup and put us on the path to prosperity.” Amy Hale of Hartland, State Coordinator for the Huckabee campaign, made a brief presentation on behalf of former Gov. Mike Huckabee, explaining her candidate is ready “to take government back for the people” and represents the average person “like me.” Palmyra resident Peggy Gannon expressed her support for Congressman Ron Paul, citing him as “more conservative than any other candidate” and someone who another voter described as the candidate “who cured my apathy.” Watson urged party unity, pointing out elections in the past lost by Republicans when party loyalty was not a priority. State Rep. Dean Cray, R-Palmyra also was present. With the candidate promotions out of the way and a table full of petitions explained, party members divided into town caucuses to elect a caucus chair, committee members (primarily all enrolled Republicans in the town), and convention delegates for May 2 and 3 at the Augusta Civic Center. Before concluding the group cast non-binding votes for presidential candidates to report for the preference poll. The final tally gave 20 ballots cast for Romney, 11 for McCain, six for Paul and four for Huckabee.
