NEWPORT – For the 35th year, snowmobiles, riders, fundraisers along with hundreds of eggs descended on Newport to celebrate fundraising for Pine Tree Camp, tallying $129,764.18 at the end of the weekend. Events began Friday night with an auction netting $8,040 for the annual fundraiser. Fundraising, however, began in September with a beginning tally of $13,159. The early fundraising along with the auction brought the Friday night total to $38,885 according to Harvey Chesley, PTC Director. Saturday morning brought in the largest commitment to the event when celebrity riders from Q106.5 arrived laden with raw eggs, and yolk covered, with a total of $42,310 to add to the weekend fundraising. Celebrities included the “Breakfast Flakes” from Q106.5, J.R. Mitchell and Paul Dupuis, along with Todd Simcox from WABI-TV, Congressman Tom Allen, Conservation Commissioner Pat McGowan. Saturday night, Mitchell issued a challenge to radio listeners pointing out that if every listener committed just $1 to the campaign, he believes the fundraising could total $88,000 to $100,000. Over a five-year period, the station and its listeners raised more than $200,000 for the camp. Saturday’s special guest was six-year-old Nicholas Alexander of Belgrade and his dad, Keith. The Alexanders were recognized for their commitment to the Rome camp and for personally raising $4,000 for the camp’s new handicapped-accessible tree house. Nicholas was a new camper last summer at the Pine Cone Day Camp, and reports wielding “a real heavy hammer” during the construction on the tree house last fall. He also had the privilege of being one of the first campers to ascend the 80-foot ramp to try out the new facility.
